Plot
In 1969, we see the introduction of three young military officers at the National War Academy: Nirmaljeet Singh Sekhon, Major Hoshiar Singh Dahiya and Lieutenant Commander Joseph Noronha. As they go through their time at the academy, the three form a very strong friendship, which in turn plays a large role in how their lives play out.
Through the course of the military campaign, which is depicted in the film, we also learn about the officers’ personal lives, which include their relationships, marriages and families. We see the emotional issues that the soldiers face out on the field and the sacrifices that their loved ones have to make. The narrative in particular looks at families that send their sons and husbands off to defend the country, aware of the dangers they are stepping into.
In the first part, we see a great focus on the emotional elements that display the support and strength that soldiers’ families provide. Also, we see the issues that women face as they stand by their partners through the possibility of separation and loss.
In the second stage, a full-scale military conflict between India and Pakistan breaks out. As Pakistani forces get set to attack Indian territory, the Indian armed forces respond with determination.
Nirmaljeet Singh Sekhon is a key player in the Indian Air Force’s effort and displays great courage in the defence of Indian airspace. On the ground, Major Hoshiar Singh Dahiya commands our troops at the border and leads his forces into heavy combat. Also in the Navy, Joseph Noronha is a main man in the country’s defence during the conflict, which is at its height.
Lieutenant Fateh Singh Kaler, who is brought to life by Sunny Deol, comes back to the battlefield and takes up a key role in the military campaign. The film, in the end, brings us the stories of the Indian Army, Air Force and Navy and puts forth issues of courage, patriotism, unity and sacrifice.

The sequel was reported to have been considered a few years ago. After Gadar 2’s success, it was revealed that in 2015, J. P. Dutta had in fact put forth the project. But that idea died in the end. Also, Deol was careful not to rehash the franchise,e which has a very strong emotional tie with the characters from the original Border.
After the success of Gadar 2, work on Border 2 picked up again, and Deol agreed to star in it. Also reported that the producers approached Ayushmann Khurrana for a supporting role, which he eventually turned down.
