Ranbir Kapoor gave what may be considered the performance of the season as Jordan, a would-be singer, which is powered by his heartbreak, which in turn propels his musical journey. Also,o with A.R. Rahman doing the score, re which is now a legend in its own right, and songs like Kun Faya Kun and Nadaan Parindey, which continue to be very much loved by the fans years on.
The Dirty Picture
Vidya Balan completely gave of herself in this bold biographical drama, which was based on the life of Silk Smitha. She put in a brave performance that broke stereotypes and proved that female-led films could be major box office hits.
Delhi Belly
Delhi Belly, known for its unconventional humor and rapid pace of storytelling, went against what the typical Bollywood movie is. Also, at the forefront of the first of the large scale Hindifilms to include dark comedy with an international film style, which made it a cult classic.
No One Killed Jessica
In the Jessica Lal case, the film put forth strong performances by Vidya Balan and Rani Mukerji in a very emotional narrative. Also,o it brought to the fore the role of the media and the public in the administration of justice.
Shaitan
This movie, which brought to the fore director Bejoy Nambiar’s distinct style of filmmaking, introduced the audience to a new genre in crime thrillers. What it had to offer in terms of innovative cinematography, background score,e and a greenfield cast of young actors gave Bollywood a very fresh urban thriller which still is very much relevant today.
Chillar Party
Produced by Salman Khan and UTV, this movie had a very important message on friendship, courage, and standing up for what is right. It went on to win the National Film Award for Best Children’s Film.
Stanley Ka Dabba
A heartwarming yet very basic story of a school-going boy who didn’t have a lunchbox, which this film portrayed so well. Many of its audience appreciated the very real performances and the film’s great social issue treatment.
Shor in the City
Raj Nidimoru and Krishna D.K. put together crime, comedy and drama in a gripping Mumbai-based story. Though it didn’t do very well at the box office, it gradually became known as one of the year’s hidden gems.
Tanu Weds Manu
Kangana Ranaut and R. Madhavan did very well together in this romantic comedy. Also, it had unique humor and willful characters that, in the end, produced a hit, which also saw a sequel in the form of Tanu Weds Manu Returns.
Singham
Ajay Devgn’s amazing turn as a true police officer in Bajirao Singham brought back the cop action genre to Bollywood. That film’s success also set the stage for what is to date the largest action franchise in Hindi cinema.
The Girl in Yellow Boots
Directed by Anurag Kashyap, this film, which stars Kalki Koechlin it presents a deep look at loneliness, identity, and emotional trauma. May not have reached a wide audience, but it is a hit among those who appreciate serious cinema for its complex storycraft.
What made 2011 so special
Unlike what we saw in past years where a single genre would dominate, in 2011 we had a little of everything.
