Simone Tata Today
Born in 1930 in Geneva, Switzerland where she lived in the mores and institutions of European culture and the rigorous atmosphere of the Geneva University she graduated from, Simone Tata was drawn to India in the early fifties by fate. Growing up in Switzerland gave her a sense of tenacity, curiosity, and perseverance that has become her hallmark work.
Family and Personal Life
Simone reached India as a tourist in 1953, where she met the industrialist Naval H. Tata. In 1955, the two got married, and she settled permanently in Mumbai. Simone settled in Indian life quite naturally, melding her European grace with indigenous sensibilities that made her a notable figure in Mumbai’s social circles when she was young.
Pioneering Leadership in Business
Simone Tata’s career took a turn when she joined the board of Lakme in 1962–a modest subsidiary of Tata Oil Mills. Lakme’s strategic thinking and marketing prowess propelled her to the forefront of India’s leading cosmetics brand, redefining beauty standards in the minds of millions of Indian women. Simone had become Chairperson of Trent Limited and went on to lead other Tata ventures, including Westside (now with hundreds of stores across India) by 1982.

Young Simone: Her Journey to India
Simone is the mother of Noel Tata and stepmother to Ratan Tata and Jimmy Tata from Naval’s previous marriage. Shannon’s life was a more meandering one for her generation, where she combined a business leadership with philanthropy, founding a number of charities and creating social change.
