Without resorting to a jumble of heavy and sophisticated spiritual jargon, I’d like to respond in plain English:
- OM is a word, and AUM is the sound of that precise word OM, i.e. Om is an auspicious word that should be chanted as AUM (AAAUUUMMM). AUM is nothing more than a sound, not a word. Furthermore, the English Alphabet ‘O’ is spelled in sanskrit as a symmetrical combination (diphthong) of A and U, resulting in AUM. Chant AAAUUUMMM to feel the play of vibrations.
- In terms of AUM mystics, you can feel the upward surge of energy when you pronounce AAAUUUMMM repeatedly, as mentioned in one of my previous writings.
- That’s possibly because when you chant AUM, you’re in tune with the cosmic music, which wants your energy to ascend upwards in the first place (towards Sahasrara Chakra.)
-
Besides, even if you’ve been chanting OM for a long time, there are no problems since, in the eyes of the cosmos, it doesn’t matter whether you’ve been chanting Om or Aum because, rather than listening to what you’re saying, cosmos wants you to listen to its own sound (which will be audible as a humming sound as you progress on this path ,which is really soothing and gets a little loud at times.) However, I strongly advise against forcing your ears to listen to humming sounds or similar sounds. Just sit quietly and meditate, allowing things to unfold as they will.
To sum up, to the best of my knowledge and expertise, I would recommend that you chant AAAUUUMMM for a few minutes if you desire, but ultimately, remain calm, sit, and do nothing. Because, believe it or not, silence, rather than sound, is the key. Enjoy the cosmic sound that follows after you enter Emptiness (Shunya).
Take care and namaste! Good luck with your meditation!!!
