Prosecco, a delightful sparkling wine originating from the Glera grape, is renowned for its refreshing and easy-drinking character. This effervescent libation caters to diverse preferences, available in a spectrum ranging from very dry to moderately sweet styles. Its universal appeal has propelled Prosecco to become the highest-selling sparkling wine globally, with an annual production reaching an impressive 2.5 billion bottles. Italy dominates this effervescence market, contributing 660 million bottles annually, and out of these, 435 million are exclusively Prosecco, as reported by Forbes.

The Prosecco story extends beyond Italy, with Australia playing a significant role. Before the regional classification of Prosecco DOC in 2009, the term “Prosecco” referred to the grape variety used in crafting this sparkling wine. Although the nomenclature shifted to Glera with the DOC designation, Australia had been cultivating Prosecco grapes for about two decades. The grape found a fertile home in Australia’s vineyards during the ’90s, leading to the production of popular sparkling wines. However, a contentious issue persists between Australia and Italy regarding the use of the term “Prosecco,” preventing the former from selling its version in the European Union. Despite this, Australian Prosecco has found a market in India.
