INS Kursura is a public museum on RK Beach in Visakhapatnam, which opened on 24 August 2002. It is among the must-visit destination in Vizag. Let’s see through the facts about INS Kursura:

  1. INS Kursura was India’s fourth submarine that was commissioned on 18 December 1969 at Riga, Soviet Union.

  2. The INS Kursura Museum is South Asia’s first and the world’s second submarine museum.

  3. The entire submarine, INS Kursura, has only two washbasins and two bathrooms. According to one of the submarine museum's councilors, the submarine would sometimes be in the middle of the sea for more than a month with 77 crewmen on board.

  4. Despite being decommissioned in 2001, INS Kursura continues to receive the Indian Navy's "Dressing Ship" award, which is normally only given to active ships.

  5. In its 31 years of service, the INS Kursura has traveled 73,500 nautical miles. This distance is far greater than the circumference of the Earth.

  6. NS Karanj, Kursura's sister submarine, was severely damaged in 1970 when she surfaced immediately beneath a ship. Kursura was selected as an ideal template because no drawing or model was given to the designers for reconstruction.
