Why Indian Movies Are Not Winning The Oscar?
The Oscar award is a prestigious award in the cinema industry and therefore holds tremendous competition.
For a long time, Bollywood has been lacking in holding its place in the same. But, when Parasite won the Academy Award for best picture (a foreign language film ever to get an Academy Award), people started to debate why Indian movies are not getting any selection and recognition in Oscars.
The major reasons that came up for the reason are:
•Selection-Indian selectors haven't been able to identify correct Indian production that is also an apprehensive Oscar flavour- The decision to send the Good Road over The lunch box in 2014 is one such example.
•Music- Somehow musicals are not much favoured in Oscars. Many good movies like Viva Zapata, La La Land were sure shots to make a footprint in Oscar but lost because they were Musicals.
Indian movies rarely did good without music and songs while Hollywood believed that unless the film is musical, songs don't do positive for a movie. In fact ,when Lagaan was nominated for Oscar, it was commented as “Too many songs” before losing.
•Money- An official Entry is not enough. A movie nominated to a category must be exhibited across a number of film festivals. For instance, an average shoe costs $2000. But Indians films which have a large amount for shows lacks in quality and film that are wealthy in quality ends up with no money.
Shwas marathi movie in 2004 miraculously got nominated in Oscars as the movie was outstanding and award-worthy. Yet, the movie could not get money for more than 15 shows.
•Plagiarism- A very common statistic is that out of 57 films exhibited to Oscars; 21 have been rejected due to plagiarism allegations. This accusation is not anything new for our directors. They are master copycats and rarely create anything original.
Barfi, Ellavya, Heena are some movies that faced rejections in Oscar due to plagiarism allegations.
•Politics- Politics is everywhere in India, even in this category. 1947: Earth was chosen above Vasaprastham which ended up not getting qualified.
