Synopsis:

Toilet: Ek Prem Katha is an Indian comedy-drama film directed by Shree Narayan Singh released in the year 2017. Co-produced by Akshay Kumar and Neeraj Pandey, the film stars Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar in the lead roles. The story revolves around the matter of open defecation in rural parts of India and the necessity of good sanitation facilities, notably toilets. The movie focuses on the cultural as well as  religious feelings that add to India's toilet problem, underlying the need of improving sanitary conditions in order to lessen sexual harassment and protect women.

Plot:

Toilet
The film follows Keshav Sharma, played by Akshay Kumar, and his wife Jaya Sharma (née Joshi), played by Bhumi Pednekar. Jaya leaves Keshav’s house on the very first day of their marriage after finding out there is no toilet in their home. Wanting to win her back, Keshav sets on a mission to build a toilet, facing a lot of obstacles from societal norms and local bureaucracy. The narrative is inspired by the true story of Anita Narre from Madhya Pradesh, who refused to return to her husband’s home because it lacked a toilet.

Toilet: Ek Prem Katha was released on 11 August 2017, just before India’s Independence Day. The film received mostly positive reviews for its scripting and the performances of the lead actors. It was a commercial success, earning ₹311.5 crore (US$45.55 million) globally. This film became Akshay Kumar's highest-grossing film and his first to enter the 300 crore club. .
