New Bollywood movie Chup, starring Sunny Deol and Dulquer Salmaan‘s, Chup released this Friday. It’s in the thriller genre movie and is directed by R. Balki and produced by R.Balki and late Rakesh Jhunjhunwala and has managed to a good response from the audience by getting a good opening at the box office across India. According to some early estimation, the movie on its opening day has collected in the range of Rs. 2.60 to 3.20 crores. The film received an advantage from the national cinema day, as it becomes the second choice for the audience after Brahmastra. A good trailer, with known faces in the star cast, and tickets at just Rs. 75 were only helped the film to get good starting on the opening day.
Chup might have strived for even a crore on Friday if not for National Cinema Day, but it is an perfect example of how the right pricing can affect the business of a feature film in India in good direction. The affordable rates of just Rs. 75 produce more audience to buy the tickets, as the price didn’t really seem difficult for anyone’s pocket. The movie was released on around 1,000 screens across India and the theatres did face a space issue on the day of release due to higher than expected requests from the audience.
Chup managed to sell around 4 lakh tickets on the first day of its release, and this is by far one of the biggest surprises of the year if we see the revenues and first day collection is concerned. By the end of opening weekend, it might outdo some of the Bollywood’s bigger releases this year. The opening of Chup is on level with some of the bigger Bollywood films like Jayeshbhai Jordaar, Runway 34, Jersey and more. However, when we see the footsteps, the opening seems even bigger than the above mentioned films on the day of release as Chup sold more tickets than the combined tickets for those films.
Chup can be seen as a case study for the industry people of how in the price-sensitive world the pricing can really help a feature film to make good money. The prices might go back to normal from tomorrow and it won’t be very surprising if the collections go down. At last, Chup has gained a good start at the box office and hopefully, this motivates more and more filmmakers to make ticket prices affordable.
