The year is 1893, and India remains under British rule. In a small village, the oppressive Captain Russell (Paul Blackthorne) has introduced an extraordinary land tax on the residents. Infuriated, Bhuvan (Aamir Khan), a defiant farmer, encourages the villagers to openly protest against the tax. In response, Russell proposes an unusual resolution: he dares Bhuvan and his men to a game of cricket, a sport entirely unfamiliar to them. Should Bhuvan and his team emerge victorious, the tax will be revoked.
