Gangs of Wasseypur – Part 1 is a 2012 Hindi-language epic black comedy crime film directed by Anurag Kashyap, who co-wrote the screenplay with Zeishan Quadri. This film is the first installment of the Gangs of Wasseypur series, which focuses on the coal mafia in Dhanbad and the ensuing power struggles, politics, and vengeance among three criminal families from 1941 to the mid-1990s. The film features a large ensemble cast, including Manoj Bajpayee, Richa Chadda, Reema Sen, Piyush Mishra, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Vineet Kumar Singh, Pankaj Tripathi, Huma Qureshi, Anurita Jha, and Tigmanshu Dhulia.

Initially shot as a single feature with a total runtime of 319 minutes, the film was divided into two parts for its theatrical release due to the impractical length for Indian cinemas. Gangs of Wasseypur was shown in its entirety at the 2012 Cannes Directors' Fortnight and was one of the few Hindi-language films to be featured there. It also screened at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2013. Filming locations included Varanasi, Bihar, and Chunar, which influenced the film's soundtrack, primarily composed of Indian folk music.

Gangs of Wasseypur – Part 1 premiered on June 22, 2012, but was banned in Kuwait and Qatar due to its violent content. The film received widespread critical acclaim upon release and garnered several awards. It was nominated for Best Film and Best Director (Anurag Kashyap) at the 55th Asia-Pacific Film Festival and won Best Audiography at the 60th National Film Awards, where Nawazuddin Siddiqui received a Special Mention for his performance. It also won four Filmfare Awards, including the Critics Award for Best Film, and Richa Chadda was awarded the Critics Award for Best Actress at the 58th Filmfare Awards.

Although it wasn't a major financial success, grossing ₹50.81 crore, the film had a modest commercial return. It marked the debut for Huma Qureshi, Anurita Jha, and Tigmanshu Dhulia, and set the stage for its sequel, Gangs of Wasseypur – Part 2, which features Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Rajkummar Rao, Aditya Kumar, and Zeishan Quadri in their respective debuts.
