Rinku (Sara Ali Khan) is from a conservative household in rural Bihar, where she frequently attempts to flee with her boyfriend. They catch her and beat her up every time, but she never exposes the identity of her boyfriend. Rinku’s grandmother decides that they must marry her off in order to pass the problem on to someone else.
Vishu (Dhanush) is a medical student who has travelled from Delhi to Bihar with his buddy Madhusudhan ‘MS’ (Ashish Verma) to start a medical camp in the rural region. Vishu is also due to marry Mandy (DImple Hayathi), the daughter of the University’s dean, in a few days in Chennai.
On their rounds, Rinku’s uncles notice Vishu and MS and decide to take up MS. Sadly, they pick up Vishu instead and proceed. They may perform the marriage and then put them on a train back to Delhi with the aid of some laughing gas and suppressants.
Both Rinku and Vishu believe that this coupling is undesirable because Vishu has Mandy and Rinku has her lover. She then tells him about Sajjad Ali Khan (Akshay Kumar), the man she fell in love with and tried to depart with several times.

Sajjad is a magician who is supposed to be in Africa practicing his skill, and Rinku tells Vishu that he would come to Delhi shortly to take her with him. Meanwhile, Vishu and his buddies must go to Chennai for the engagement, and they invite Rinku along.
At the engagement, Vishu hides the truth that he was forcedly wedded from Mandy on MS’s recommendation. Rinku also teases him during the event. When one of Mandy’s cousins shows her a video of Vishu’s engagement, the entire event falls apart.
As they travel to Delhi, Vishu pours his feelings out to Rinku, telling her that he has fallen for her in the previous few days, which heals the pain of his broken engagement. Rinku soon hears an elephant horn and realises that Sajjad has arrived.
Vishu gets depressed as a result of the news and hides into his job. He instructs MS to go say farewell to Rinku and Sajjad, but when MS arrives, he finds that Sajjad does not exist. He’s a creation of Rinku’s mind.
He runs back to tell Vishu, and the two of them debate about what caused this illusion. They decide that the love tale she narrates earlier is about her parents, and that when they were killed in front of her eyes, she manifested the image of her father, Sajjad, to cope with the pain.
He appears whenever she is exposed to someone so that he may create a wall around her and protect her. MS tells Vishu that in order to cure Rinku of her hallucination, she must realise on her own that she does not exist, and that all they can do is give her suitable medication while Vishu attempts to woo her in his favour.
The drug helps slightly, but Vishu becomes impatient with her recuperation. While he is drunk, he goes to Rinku’s room to tell her the truth about Sajjad. Rinku informs him that Sajjad has a fever, and Vishu agrees to examine him.
Vishu chooses without telling her the truth, and the two of them exchange a kiss on the cheek. As Sajjad notices this, he becomes jealous and threatens to harm himself. He argues that Vishu must first establish himself before requesting Rinku’s affection.
Vishu becomes irritated and says that Sajjad must also prove himself before smashing beer bottles on his head. He claims that if Sajjad cared about her, he could stop Vishu, but he is unable to do so. Vishu spends the night at the hospital and Rinku and Sajjad pay him a visit the next morning to repent.
Ending explained in detail:
A magicians greatest trick
As an apology for not stopping him the night before, Sajjad offers to demonstrate Vishu one of his finest magic acts. He claims to be able to make the Taj Mahal vanish for a brief moment. Vishu takes the gift, and the next day they all travel to Agra.
With the lure of money, Vishu and his friends assemble the people around to secretly clap anytime Rinku does and play along with her. MS gives Rinku her medications just as Sajjad is ready to pull off the trick, and Sajjad’s ploy fails. The crowd unintentionally claps, and Rinku’s mind begins to question.
As they return, Rinku castigates Sajjad for his failure and seeks comfort from Vishu. At this time, Sajjad calls out to her and slashes his wrists in front of her. She yells out in despair, and Vishu and the others pretend to operate on Sajjad.
When MS advises that they simply tell her that he died, Vishu is hesitant to do so and rather informs her that they were able to save him. The next day, Vishu informs Rinku that she must go with Sajjad soon the divorce paperwork has been signed.
The planets are not aligned
Vishu and Rinku go to the courtroom to sign their divorce papers, which the lawyer has arranged for them. Rinku is reluctant to sign with them and keeps making excuses. Ultimately, she decides to flee the courtroom in order to avoid signing.
She gets into an auto and tells him to take them back to their hostel, but Vishu also gets in. She beseeches him not to compel her to sign since she enjoys being his wife. He does, after all, care about her. She also refuses to let go of Sajjad, which Vishu finds objectionable.
He offers her an ultimatum to pick between him and Sajjad. When she is unable to decide, he urges her to return home and prepare since he would marry her that day whatever.
Letting go of the past
As she returns, she asks Sajjad to speak some sense into Vishu, but Sajjad disappears. Vishu appears with a full band and baaraat and joins them in the dance. Rinku urges him to stop and informs him that Sajjad has departed for Japan and will not be returning.
Vishu and MS inform her that they may join him to Japan to complete the wedding. They walk over to the railway station, where Vishu informs her that they would wait for her for a few hours outside. She has the choice of departing with Sajjad or returning to take her husband’s position.
She enters and finds Sajjad with a little girl. He tells her about her mother and how strong she was. He also informs her that the small child represents Rinku’s younger self.
Sajjad says that the moment has come to let go since she has met someone who loves her and would protect her. He bids her farewell for the last time and informs her that he will never return.
Rinku sobs uncontrollably before returning to where Vishu is waiting for her. They hug, understanding that they will spend the rest of their lives together.
