Preity Zinta was born to a Rajput family in Shimla. Her father, Durganand Zinta, was an Indian Army officer who was killed in a car accident when Preity was thirteen. She has two brothers, Deepankar and Manish Zinta, with Deepankar himself serving as a commissioned officer in the Indian Army.

Preity was a student of Convent of Jesus and Mary boarding school in Shimla, wherein she showed outright brilliance in academics and sports, particularly basketball. Later on, she pursued an honors degree in English from St. Bede's College in Shimla and followed it up with a postgraduate qualification in criminal psychology. Preity Zinta made her entry into Bollywood with the 1998 film Dil Se. directed by Mani Ratnam. Her role in the movie, cast alongside Shah Rukh Khan and Manisha Koirala, was much recognized.
