Cristine Silawan, a 16-year-old high school student and churchgoer, tragically lost her life when she was found dead in an abandoned area in Lapu City, Cebu. Her body was discovered in a gruesome state, with half of her face stripped to the skull and numerous knife wounds.

Silawan’s disturbing fate unfolded after she was lured into meeting someone she believed to be her secret boyfriend through a fake Facebook account. The suspect, posing as another man, attempted to court her, leading to the tragic events that culminated in her death on March 11, 2019.
Despite the arrest of one suspect, John, who was Silawan’s ex, he denied involvement in the horrific crime. Another suspect, Renato Llenes, initially confessed to the murder but later pleaded not guilty. Tragically, Llenes took his own life on May 24, 2020, leaving unanswered questions surrounding the heinous act.
Silawan was last seen with three individuals on March 10, 2019, while walking to church in the Philippines. Her lifeless body was discovered the next morning in a field in Lapu City, with her clothing taken. The perpetrators, suspected to be influenced by drugs or engaging in a sick ritual, mutilated her face, leaving only teeth, eyes, and hair.
The investigation into Silawan’s murder faced challenges, including conflicting alibis from suspects’ families and the exploration of motives, such as jealousy, due to Silawan’s recent breakup with John. The police continued to search for two additional suspects even after declaring the investigation “closed.”
As we reflect on the tragic events that unfolded over three years ago, questions linger about the involvement of multiple individuals in this heinous crime and the motivations that led to such a gruesome end for Cristine Silawan. Our thoughts go out to her and her family as we remember this disturbing incident.
