Born in Jilinggora village in the Seraikela Kharsawan district of Jharkhand on November 1, 1956, Champai Soren has devoted his life to promoting community welfare and tribal rights. The family's engagement in Jharkhand politics is furthered by the fact that his daughter, Dukhni Soren, is also engaged in the JMM.

On February 2, 2024, Champai Soren took on the role of Chief Minister following Hemant Soren’s arrest by the Enforcement Directorate on money laundering charges. Despite the challenges of political uncertainty, he managed to secure a trust vote in the Assembly, underscoring his leadership. His tenure, though brief—lasting until July 3, 2024—highlighted his resilience and dedication to governance.

Recently, Champai Soren considered leaving JMM due to feeling undervalued but ultimately joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on August 30, 2024, following a meeting with senior BJP leader Amit Shah.
