Tarla Dalal is synonymous with Indian vegetarian cuisine, often compared to Julia Child. Initially a homemaker, her exceptional cooking skills evolved into a successful business, earning her the Padma Shri award.

Dalal was born in 1936 in Pune, Maharashtra, and grew up in a Vaishnav family. She developed an interest in cooking early, assisting her mother. She earned a BA in Economics in 1956 and married Nalin Dalal in 1960, moving to Mumbai.

Encouraged by her husband, Dalal explored cooking beyond traditional Indian dishes. Her friends in Mumbai suggested she share her recipes, leading to her first cooking classes, which quickly gained popularity. This success led to her debut cookbook, "The Pleasure of Vegetarian Cooking," published in 1974, selling over 1.5 million copies.

Dalal became a trusted name for her ability to introduce non-Indian recipes and create vegetarian versions of non-vegetarian dishes. She authored many books, including "Acidity Cookbook," "100 Calorie Snacks," and "Popular Restaurant Gravies."

In 1987, she founded Sanjay and Co. with her daughter and launched a website featuring over 17,000 recipes, making it the largest Indian food site. She also started Tarla Dalal Foods, offering ready-to-cook mixes. Embracing social media, Dalal shared updates and cooking videos, particularly on YouTube, and wrote cookbooks for children and pregnant women.

Awarded the Padma Shri in 2007, she launched the "Total Health Series" and hosted the show "Cook it up With Tarla Dalal." Dalal passed away in 2013, leaving behind a legacy of over 100 books and ten million copies sold. Her son, Sanjay, continues her legacy through her website, and her daughter manages her social media platforms.

Dalal and her husband had two sons, Sanjay and Deepak, and a daughter, Renu. Her husband passed away in 2005. She raised funds for asthma and cancer patients through her cooking shows and passed away on November 6, 2013, at age 77.
