This 2018 batch IAS officer is a beautiful example of beauty with brains. Srushti secured a rank of 5th in the AIR of the Civil Services Examination, which is most famously known as the IAS exam, conducted by the Union Public Service Commission. She became the topmost ranked woman, attaining this height at the early age of 23. From her early schooling to her induction into the elite Indian Administrative Service, what has been an endless journey toward success is an epitome of hard work and an amount of strategic planning.

Srushti was born on 20 March 1995 in Kasturba Nagar, Madhya Pradesh, her family being a well-read one. Her father, Jayant Deshmukh, is an engineer in BHEL, a government enterprise at Bhopal, and her mother, Sunita Deshmukh, is a teacher in a pre-primary school. Her younger brother, Atharva Deshmukh, is still studying.

Since her school days, Srushti has shown strong promise in her academic performance. She is an alumnus of Carmel Convent School in Bhopal. Her academic record was meritorious, with her scoring 8 CGPA in the Class X board exams and 93.4% in the Class XII board exams. Her academic journey didn't stop; moving onto Laxmi Narayan College of Technology affiliated with Rajiv Gandhi Technological University, RGPV, Bhopal, she completed her undergraduate studies in Chemical Engineering between the years 2014-2018. The rigors of her engineering course did not act as a deterrent from leading a balanced life, as Srushti actively involved herself in yoga and meditation every day. She also has a hobby of sing.

Srushti's first ambition was fulfilling a seat in any IIT College, but very soon during her course of engineering studies, it dawned on her that she was actually meant for the Indian Administrative Service. She started preparing for the UPSC Civil Services Examination from her college days. Srushti had a very methodical and disciplined approach. She participated in a lot of extracurricular activities, such as debates, Scouts and Guides, and many other cultural activities, which ultimately led her to the development of a great personality. Another area of interest is NCC, through which she developed leadership qualities and discipline.

Her preparation strategy was of simple and clear making. Srushti chose Sociology as her optional subject for the UPSC exam since Chemical Engineering, her undergraduate subject, was not offered as an optional paper by UPSC. Srushti opted for Sociology only because the subject was comfortable for her and she was well aware of its importance for the examination from a strategic point of view.

Personal life and Marriage:

After performing brilliantly in the UPSC exam, Srushti married Dr. Nagarjuna B. Gowda, who is an IAS officer but a batch senior to her in the 2018 batch. It's here at LBSNAA where this love story travelled from just a flicker to a blaze. Nagarjuna, born on 9 May 1992 in Karnataka, completed his MBBS and thereafter in the year 2018 cracked the UPSC examination securing the 418th rank. The joining of two bright minds from two different states into the institution of marriage brought them even closer to fulfilling that purpose.

Details of Professional Life and Achievements:

Srushti's first posting as an IAS officer was in Dindori, Madhya Pradesh, where she served as Assistant Collector. She was later transferred to Gadarwara of Narsinghpur district in the state with the designation of Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO). A streak of dedication to public service and a zealousness to make a difference in society, particularly toward women empowerment and education, had been leading her through her service.

Study Strategy and Success Mantra:

On success, she attributes her success to being consistent and having a well thought-out study schedule. In fact, she states that regular test series were a hallmark of her preparation exercise. "I always say studying for five to six hours daily is better than beating up the brains like a draught animal for long hours on some days and then taking breaks the other day," says Srushti. This steady method, along with regular testing, helped inform her self-assessment of progress and areas that demanded that she pull the rope.

Yet, on the positive side it was totally full of online resources, due to which she never felt the necessity of any kind of specialized coaching in or within Delhi. Her main study material included NCERT books of Class VI to XII, standard books for each of the subjects, and online test series. The Hindu, The Indian Express, online platforms of PIB, Rajya Sabha TV, etc. were the few means through which she also kept herself abreast about current affairs.

The Srushti Jayant Deshmukh case is one big ray of hope and a good example for any budding civil servant, more so for women. Her story goes on to show us that if one has dedication, persistence, and a defined approach toward pursuing something, then surely, the most unbeatable challenges are overcome. Srushti, committed to her goal—and her family in the determination to get into public service—makes her a role model for many. She's an inspiration to her peers, that one doesn't need to graduate from an exclusive college or have a privileged upbringing in order to be very successful. Everything is possible if it has a good dosage of hard work and determination.
