Ajaypal Singh Banga is an American business entrepreneur of Indian descent who was born in Pune, Maharashtra, India's Khadki cantonment on November 10, 1959. His father, Harbhajan Singh Banga, was a former lieutenant-general in the Indian Army, hence he comes from a Saini Sikh family. The familial origins of Ajay Banga may be found in Jalandhar, Punjab. He spent his early years at Khadki, where his father was deployed as an army officer. M. S. Banga, the older brother of Ajay Banga, is a renowned businessman as well.

Banga attended the Hyderabad Public School in Hyderabad after completing his early schooling at Shimla's St. Edward's School. He continued his schooling at Delhi's St. Stephen's College, where he earned a bachelor of arts (honours) in economics. He then graduated with a PGP in management, which is the same as an MBA, from Ahmedabad's esteemed Indian Institute of Management. Harbhajan Singh Banga, a former lieutenant-general in the Indian Army, is Ajay Banga's father. He also has a well-known businessman an elder brother, M. S. Banga. Their ancestors are from Punjab's Jalandhar.

In 1981, he started working for Nestlé as a management trainee to launch his business career. He acquired a great deal of expertise in general management, marketing, and sales during the following 13 years. After that, Banga joined PepsiCo, where he was instrumental in bringing multinational fast food chains like KFC and Pizza Hut to India to take advantage of the developing economy of the country. 

Banga began working for Citigroup in 1996 as a debt collector and worked his way up the corporate ladder. He had important roles, such as chief executive of Citi's International Global Consumer Group, where he oversaw the bank's global microfinance strategy. Because of his remarkable leadership abilities, Banga was appointed CEO of Citigroup's Asia-Pacific division in 2008, where he oversaw extensive restructuring.

Banga became president and chief executive officer of Mastercard in 2010. He tripled revenues, increased net income sixfold, and greatly increased the company's market value throughout his tenure, all of which were outstanding accomplishments. He championed Mastercard's commitment to planting 100 million trees and created programmes like the Priceless Planet Coalition, a partnership of businesses committed to environmental preservation. Banga had an impact outside of the business sector. As the head of the U.S.-India Business Council, he represented several foreign businesses making investments in India. He also served as the International Chamber of Commerce chairman, illustrating his influence on a worldwide scale.
