Temples Based On Goddess Sati's Body Parts
In Hindu mythology, after the goddess Sati sacrificed herself, her husband Lord Shiva was grief-stricken and wandered the universe carrying her body. It is said that it was Lord Vishnu's disc that cut the goddess's body into 52 parts, which fell to the Earth and are now sacred sites that people visit to pay their respects to the goddess. This is a widely accepted explanation for the origin of the Shakti Peethas.
