Difference Between MP & MLA Explained

MP & MLA Difference

The words MLA and MP refer to the nation's direct and indirect elected officials who serve in the state & union government, respectively. Indian democracy is structured as a system of district-based representation. An assembly is the organisation in charge of running a state or union territory in the nation. MLAs are the members chosen in state assembly seats by direct voting. The Lok Sabha (lower house) and Rajya Sabha make up the parliament that rules the republic of India (upper house). The members of the Rajya Sabha are chosen through indirect elections by the MLAs, whereas the members of the Lok Sabha are chosen directly from the parliamentary seats. MPs, or Members of Parliament, refer to both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members.

MLA and MP DIfference

The elected member of a state's legislative assembly is known as an MLA. He or she speaks for the residents of the assembly district from which they were elected. A representative of the Lok Sabha or the Rajya Sabha is known as an MP. They are employed by the parliamentary district they serve.

During state-level elections, MLAs are chosen by the eligible voters in an assembly constituency. During the Lok Sabha elections, MPs are chosen directly. The MLAs choose the Rajya Sabha's MPs in a roundabout way.

How They Work

Making ensuring that every vote has the same weight is the main goal of democratic elections in the state. The country is divided into constituencies such that each constituency will have a population that is about equal to the other. Many assembly constituencies make up each parliamentary constituency. As a result, there are around seven to nine MLAs in the state government for every MP in the federal government.

MLAs serve the people at the state level, whilst MPs serve them at the national level. They are responsible for maintaining and promoting development initiatives within their particular constituencies. Elections are the means by which citizens may choose their representatives and form their own government.

Responsibilities

Making legislation based on the Indian constitution is the major duty of MLAs and MPs. The state list, as well as some items on the concurrent list, are handled by the state legislature. The union list and a few items on the concurrent list are handled by the parliament. The assembly and parliament at the state and union levels enact several bills pertaining to governance during various sessions. At the state and federal levels, respectively, the MLAs and MPs cast votes in favour of the legislation and take part in the legislative process.
